2022 Quiz Night

On Saturday 22nd October 2022 the Greek Lyceum held its first ever Quiz Night. The night was a great success, hosting over 120 people for a fun filled evening. Quizzes included our theme for 2022 - The Greek Summer.

The Quiz Night was held to bring our community together to celebrate Summer on the Greek Islands in our own backyard as many in our community who would usually go home to their Summer houses have been unable to travel the last few years. So the Greek Lyceum brought the Greek Summer to Adelaide!

With funding assistance from the Department for Premier and Cabinet, Multicultural SA, the Greek Lyceum was able to hold this fundraising event. The cabaret-style night included quizzes, games, dance performances and dancing! We would like to thank the Department of Premier and Cabinet Multicultural Affairs for the generous funding through the grant program ‘Celebrate Together’.

The night was such a success that feedback from our guests was that they can’t wait for the next Quiz Night from the Greek Lyceum. Attendees said that it was the best quiz night they’ve ever been to, they had the most fun in years and the night was well organised, flowed smoothly and was both entertaining and informative.

It looks like this event will become a staple in the Greek Lyceum social calendar!

2022 - An update

It’s already May! We are into Term 2 and our students have been busy keeping warm and keeping the Greek Summer alive with our Summer Holidays in Greece curriculum, celebrating all things we love about Summer Holidays on the Greek Islands. Our students have been learning folk dances from various Greek Island groups such as Dodecanese, Ionian, Cycladic, Sporadic, Aegean and of course Crete! Here are some photos of our students hard at work in classes. You can also see more on our Facebook and Instagram accounts.

Concert 2021

The students of the Greek Lyceum are proud to present their concert for 2021: Greece 2021: Footsteps through time: 200 Years Since the Revolution: A Celebration of Greek History and Culture through Dance.

The concert will take audience members on a journey through time, beginning in Ancient Greece, through the Ottoman Occupation, into the Revolution, post-Revolution celebrations and through to the present day. Students will show the development of Greek dance through history, starting with the soft, swaying of the Ancient Greek maidens, the strong courageous steps of Greek Warriors, and the joyful, social scene of the modern Greek era.

We would like to thank the Department of Premier and Cabinet Multicultural Affairs, the Hon. Steven Marshall and the Hon. Jing Lee for the generous funding through the grant program ‘Celebrate Together’, which has assisted us to be able to share this important performance with the wider community.

Preparations are well under way for our concert. There are limited tickets remaining. Head over to TryBooking today to enjoy this wonderful event with us!

We would like to thank the Department of Premier and Cabinet Multicultural Affairs, the Hon. Steven Marshall and the Hon. COVID-19 Response

What a year 2020 has been! Here at the Lyceum, teachers and students were planning something very special for 2020, but then the world was struck with the Coronavirus!

So, what did the Lyceum do? They did what they do best - kept dancing - but virtually!

The Lyceum Committee was quick to respond to recommendations from the state and federal government and quickly moved all classes to online learning. This way, students could keep in touch with their learning and also keep in touch socially with classmates and teachers. The online learning was very successful, and students enjoyed keeping up with their regular classes.

In the future, we hope to be able to continue providing our online community with resources to keep the Greek culture alive and provide education on Greek heritage to those wishing to learn.

Successful Grant Application

Today we have learnt we have been successful for the Expand Together Grant through Multicultural SA. This is the equipment grant that will now enable us to store the school's music and to combine multiple pieces of music together so that new dance choreography can be performed. We will be using the new routines for our upcoming performances this festival season.

These tools will provide the teachers with the capability and flexibility needed to work together to have the dance routines ready for students and to lift the level of dance performance to the next level. In addition, we are now in a position to be able to connect more effectively with other Greek dance groups to share ideas and collabroate for future performances and concerts.

Update 14th March 2020

As part of our continued commitment to you, we have created a virtual classroom through YouTube which we will make available for Greek Lyceum students. We have been able to achieve this using the equipment that was purchased recently under the Expand Together Grant (see details above). The purpose of this YouTube channel will be to privately share videos to our students which will enable them to learn dances at home if they are not able to attend classes. At this time, as we have cancelled lessons pending the outcome of the COVID-19 situation, we will upload videos each week so students can continue to keep in touch with their dancing virtually!

The Greek Lyceum of SA wishes to thank the Hon Jing Lee MLC Assistant Minister to the Premier and the Government of South Australia for their support in the purchase of these items that will help to make the Greek Lyceum of South Australia even better!
