History & Traditions

The Greek Lyceum of South Australia Inc. is an incorporated, non-profit Adelaide-based Greek-Australian school of Greek Dance and Culture whose principal role is the fostering of Greek Dance and Culture to South Australian children and adults. The Charter of the Greek Lyceum’s Constitution states that we are a non-party political and non-party religious organisation.

Our mission is to present and perpetuate the rich history and traditions of the songs, dances, music and costumes of Greece to the greater public.

Since its inception in 1993, the school’s Artistic Director, School Council, teaching staff and students have focused on carrying out their mission to educate both Greek and non-Greek communities about the richness of the Hellenic folk culture and heritage through staged performances in the Adelaide area, country S.A. centres and interstate; dance workshops/seminars; lectures; costume and folk art exhibits.

The school has developed and advanced under the guidance and instruction of our founder and Artistic Director Vasily Mouzakitis together with the School Council and staff, to produce South Australia’s premier Greek Dance School.  We currently have around 40 students ranging in age from 4 – 35. Over the past twenty years, the school has taught three generations of South Australians of Greek heritage – approximately 1500 students.

The Greek Lyceum’s repertoire encompasses a wide variety of Greek folk arts (Music, Song and Dance) from all regions of Greece, including those of Cyprus and those of communities of the Greek Diaspora, past and present.

All those involved with the Greek Lyceum believe the School’s performance genre and community work is a vital, living link between the engraved folk traditions and their contemporary expressions within radically different contexts.  These survive not only in memory and legend, but in dynamic structures which continue to shape the Hellenic identity and communities of the Greek Diaspora.
